Kayak Fishing Tips For Anglers

Kayaking is a fantastic hobby. It is a great workout and due to its design and maneuverability of the craft, it can get you to areas where most boats cannot go. Because they are swift and lightweight, kayaks also are great for fishing. Whether you are on the ocean kayak fishing or on a lake fishing it requires a few specific kayak fishing tips.

While sport fishing can be fun you need to know what you are going after if you are fishing from a kayak. For example, it is probably not the best idea to attempt marlin fishing from a kayak, red fish or snapper are a more ideal fish to catch. Once you have an idea of what you are fishing for, you can begin to select your kayak fishing gear. Keep in mind there is not a ton of storage room on a kayak, so a small tackle box, net, some spare line and extra rod and reel are all you should bring.  Other kayak fishing accessories to consider include rod holders, fish finder and a cooler to store your fish.

Safety while kayaking is important, ensure that you have a personal floating device with you, pick one that is comfortable for you while paddling and does not restrict your casting or retrieving fish.  A cell phone stored in a water proof bag or case is recommended in case you need to make an emergency call.  You also need to familiar yourself with self-rescue techniques such as rolls and wet-exits in case of a capsize.

You need to be aware of your surroundings. Just because you are in a craft that can go just about anywhere that does not mean you should. If you are fishing back waters be aware of where the current is pushing you. You do not want to end up directly over the spot you are trying to fish. Positioning yourself in an area far enough away where you can make small adjustments with out disturbing the area you are trying to fish is key.

The last and most important of all kayak fishing tips is to have a blast. Fishing in a kayak can take you from the serene mangrove forests of Florida to the coast of Alaska and everything in between. You are fishing in a craft where you can go almost anywhere so don’t forget to look around and enjoy the view. There are plenty more kayak fishing tips out there so be smart and learn as many as you can before you go.
